Sanxingdui Museum is Seeking the Design Proposal worldwide for its New Hall

For advancing the construction of Sanxingdui National Demonstration Area for Cultural Relics Protection, displaying the role of Sanxingdui Ancient Shu Civilization in the civilization history of China and the world, accelerating the application for the World Cultural Heritage and developing a global highland for ancient civilization research and cultural tourism, Sanxingdui Museum has been seeking a concept design proposal for the Sanxingdui Museum of Ancient Shu Cultural Relics and its ancillary facilities (New Hall and Tourist Center Project of Sanxingdui Museum) from October 10.

In November 2019, the comprehensive exploration and key excavation restarted at Sanxingdui Ruin Site, where several sacrifice pit clusters similar to No.1 and 2 sacrifice pits are found and the trace of important cultural relics emerge and indicate a hidden new great discovery. On September 6, 2020, approved by the National Cultural Heritage Administration, Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relics and Archaeology Research Institute has, jointly with a number of domestic agencies, initiated the scientific excavation to the sacrifice area of Sanxingdui Ruin Site, opening a new era for the archaeology of Sanxingdui Ruin Site. Covering a floor area of 10,800 square meters, the two existing exhibition halls fail to house new cultural relics as the new archaeological discoveries are constantly being made at Sanxingdui Ruin Site. To this end, in order to construct a world-class museum of ancient ruins, make proper arrangement for new archaeological discoveries at Sanxingdui Ruin Site, enhance the protection and display of cultural relics and promote the upgrading of museum tourism service facilities, we've decided to build the New Hall of Sanxingdui Museum with high-level planning and high standards, and thus launched this solicitation for conceptual proposal.

The project has a building area of about 35,000m2, including about 30,000m2 for Sanxingdui Museum of Ancient Shu Cultural Relics (New Hall of Sanxingdui Museum) and about 5,000m2 for the Tourist Center. The estimated investment totals RMB1.06 billion, covering the New Hall, Tourist Center, display, exhibition, transformation of two exhibition halls, intelligent security and protection system, overall landscape greening, main entrance to the scenic area, river system renovation, parking lot and other ancillary works.

Following the philosophy of the 1st rate in the world, this solicitation is designed to seek a schematic design of the New Hall project from competent and experienced high-level design agencies worldwide. We will innovate the "Trophy type" selection of compensation mechanism and combine the expert review and the online evaluation. Expert review: 10 design proposals will be picked over the eligible design agencies through prequalification for the second stage of expert review; then, 3 proposals will be selected by domestic top and multi-disciplinary members of proposal review committee; and a proposal will be finally reviewed and chosen by the expert group. Online evaluation: in order to maximize the solicitation of proposals, such independent designers as individuals and combinations thereof are also provided with a solicitation competition platform, where an online evaluation is set up. This solicitation offers reasonable economic compensation to the participating design agencies or individuals, in the hope of improving their enthusiasm. This solicitation compensation award adds up to RMB10 million. The specific requirements have been available on the China Tendering & Bidding Public Service Platform, www.chinabidding.cn, and the official website of Sanxingdui Museum since October 10.

"The New Hall of Sanxingdui Museum is an important part of the construction of the Sanxingdui National Archaeological Park and the declaration of World Cultural Heritage. The application proposals are expected to mirror the guiding ideology of ‘people oriented’ and ‘combination of museum and park’, so that the New Hall of Sanxingdui Museum may become a landmark cultural building with international and Chinese styles. We sincerely invite outstanding design teams and individuals with innovative spirit from all over the world to participate in this solicitation." Zhu Jiake, Deputy Director of Sanxingdui Scenic Area Management Committee, Secretary of the Party Committee and Executive Deputy Curator of the Sanxingdui Museum, was sending an invitation for solicitation to the design teams worldwide.
